By 2030 capitalism and patriarchy had run its course. No one country had enough energy or materials to produce new goods and thus overconsumption was seen as a moral deficit in the community. The advent of AI and its misuse for mundane entertainment and basic reasoning skills replacement, resulted in the rapid decrease of water on the planet. First generation users quickly became disenchanted with the continued push from corporations to implement it in their lives.
People were exhausted. The young began to refuse military service to countries and borders they no longer believed in. Indigenous peoples continued to restore the land through traditional knowledge and methods of caretaking.
The younger generation of farmers that were using organic methods travelled from place to place in order to help others with subsistence farming. Every lawn became a vegetable and flower garden. Dandelion and purslane were now a food staple.
As the constructed regimes failed, the clatter of the world began to subside and the trees could be heard. It was but a shimmering sort of whisper as the wind moved through the trees. The word psithurism came back into fashion. Over time, the whispers could be heard and felt by all.
With the need to find some way of moving forward, the people began to seek understanding in quiet places. They sought shelter from the screaming voices of the capitalist society they themselves had created.
They began to listen to and honour the trees.
